Do civilizations/eras die with their Gods and the world goes on?

The gods of the era of the Aztecs, Mayans, Greeks. Romans, Witch doctors and other primitives died out or are dying out. Christianity may be on life support as we speak. But isn't it normal - don't they have to p away so that the world could progress?
