Does Satan really exist?

I mean I feel that "Satan" is almost a scapegoat and was created by people for exactly that reason. I know that in the bible it mentions Satan but I think the bible is highly symbolic. Is there any theologist or expert out there that can answer if Satan is real or just symbolic? I mean I think humans do a good enough job of spreading evil, I don't think there needs to be an evil entity behind that.
