What are some major milestones in english history that took them from an absolute monarchy to a democracy?

The independence of India, the Rush for Africa, World War 2 (Churchill's term as prime minister saw the final collapse of the British Empire and the beginning of the democracy), plus the social attitudes of the early/middle 19th century were much more liberal then previous times. Absolute monarchy just wasn't an appealing form of government anymore (especially after Hitler's absolute power caused the death of millions-simply because he was the unquestioned ruler).
