Why did shakespeare write the witches having beards in macbeth?

Though the previous answers to this question are nice interpretations, I think it likely that Shakespeare mentions the witches' beard in an attempt to be funny, as the actors in Shakespeare's time were all men (something which would be apparent to the audience at that time and therefore make the line appear funny because the actors would probably have beards naturally).
